POLLEN – HARD WORK OF BEES
Bee pollen is extremely valuable both to humans and to bees themselves. Did you know that in order to form a single load of the honeybee’s legs the bee has to visit from 7 to 120 flowers and to collect 1 kg of dust the bees have to make about 66 thousand flights – hence the saying “busy as a bee”. Each plant has its own unique appearance, shape, size and color, which in pollen is a reflection of which plant it comes from.
And how do bees collect such pollen?
The bees visit thousands of flowers, using a pollen comb to comb the pollen from their body (hairs) to form lumps. The color of the pollen can be light yellow, orange, black, violet (depending on the plant from which the bees came to collect the pollen) The bees place it in baskets, on the 3rd leg. They carry this pollen into the hive and store it in the bee cells. The pollen is then beaten firmly with the heads in the honeycombs, poured lightly over the honey, and then went through a process of lactic fermentation, resulting in the creation of a freckle called ‘bee bread’. A bee family needs pollen to feed larvae, produce royal jelly and wax by bees, to build up fat tissue. Just like bears, bees also accumulate supplies for the winter:).
